I built a window and called it the world
Kept my face in the pale blue light
I learned every shortcut, every back door
But forgot where a real door goes
I saved my name in a locked little file
Changed my skin when the weather got loud
I said I was fine in a language of code
With nobody around
Every little light
Looked like someone coming home
But every time I reached for it
I was still alone
I built a window and called it the world
Found every door and still couldn’ t leave
In a nutshell, I’ m almost alive
In a nutshell, I’ m trying to breathe
I touch the screen and the screen stares back
But it never says my name
I’ m not the ghost in the machine
I’ m the boy who built his own cage
My friends are sleeping in blue little squares
Tired eyes and jokes so bright
We laugh like people who know how to breathe
Then disappear into the night
I made my shame look clean and brave
Made it look safe, made it behave
Called it control, called it a life
Till it started to feel like a shell
Every little sound
Felt like someone calling me
But every time I answered it
I lost another piece
I built a window and called it the world
Found every door and still couldn’ t leave
In a nutshell, I’ m almost alive
In a nutshell, I’ m trying to breathe
I touch the screen and the screen stares back
But it never says my name
I’ m not the ghost in the machine
I’ m the boy who built his own cage
